Significance of Bakrid
Also known as Eid al-Adha or Eid al-Bakri, it is one of the most prominent Islamic holidays celebrated by Muslims around the world. The festival commemorates the profound sacrifice made by Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his willingness to offer his son in obedience to Ishwar (God).
In compliance with God’s command, Ibrahim was ready to sacrifice his son. But during this act God intervened and a lamb was sacrificed in place of Ibrahim’s son.
To commemorate this act, Muslims acknowledge Abraham’s devotion and celebrate Eid-ul-Adha annually. It is marked by the slaughter of a sheep or animal, which is then divided into three parts. One part goes to the family and the other two parts go to the poor and needy.
